LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - August 30, 2016) - Today at VMworld® 2016, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) introduced VMware Integrated OpenStack 3, the latest release of VMware's OpenStack distribution now based on the OpenStack Mitaka release. VMware is introducing new features to make deploying OpenStack clouds simpler and more cost-effective as well as allow customers to use existing VMware vSphere® workloads in an API-driven OpenStack cloud.

Traditional businesses today must effectively transform into software companies to differentiate themselves through applications and services that deliver new customer experiences. To hasten their digital business transformation, enterprises are embracing cloud computing to help speed application development lifecycles to realize and respond to new business opportunities rapidly. VMware is helping IT enable developers to become more productive.

"For customers developing on OpenStack, our mission is to make VMware Integrated OpenStack the most resource efficient and cost-effective OpenStack distribution to run in production," said Ajay Singh, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Management Business Unit, VMware. "Leveraging our experience and history of contributions to OpenStack, we've focused on streamlining deployment, operations and upgrades to help IT deliver an OpenStack cloud in a predictable fashion and time frame. The faster IT deploys the cloud, the faster developers get access to OpenStack services and APIs to build new apps and services that differentiate the business."

Mitaka-Based VMware Integrated OpenStack 3 Increases Developer Productivity

A top 10 overall contributor to OpenStack, VMware is using that expertise to provide customers with the fastest and most efficient solution to deploy and operate OpenStack clouds on-premises without costly professional services. VMware Integrated OpenStack 3 is based on the Mitaka release enabling customers to take advantage of new enhancements to manageability, scalability and user experience. Some of the features and enhancements in Mitaka include:

  • Improved day-to-day experience for cloud admins and IT administrators;
  • Simplified configuration for Nova compute service; and,
  • Streamlined Keystone identity service is now a one-step process for setting up the identity management features of a cloud network.

Existing VMware Integrated OpenStack customers will be able to take advantage of the software's built-in upgrade capability to migrate to VMware Integrated OpenStack 3. First introduced in VMware Integrated OpenStack 2, the feature enables seamless upgrades between OpenStack releases.

VMware has optimized and architected its management control plane to run full OpenStack in as few as two virtual machines. VMware Integrated OpenStack 3 reduces the infrastructure and related costs required to power a production-ready OpenStack cloud that can scale to thousands of virtual machines, volumes and networks while streamlining operations. This compact management control plane allows IT teams to build small OpenStack clouds for departments or branch locations cost-effectively and in as little as 15 minutes. The latest release will also enable customers to import existing VMware vSphere virtual machines into OpenStack. This capability enables developers to easily move their key project workloads and manage them through OpenStack APIs on day one.

VMware Integrated OpenStack enables IT operations teams to deliver OpenStack APIs to development teams on top of VMware infrastructure including VMware vSphere, VMware NSX® and VMware Virtual SAN™ without the need for new tools or additional training. IT operations teams can use existing investments in VMware vRealize® Operations™ and VMware vRealize Log Insight™, which are tightly integrated with both VMware Integrated OpenStack and VMware vSphere, to proactively deliver faster and easier holistic monitoring and troubleshooting of their OpenStack and virtual infrastructure, respectively. Additionally, VMware vRealize Business™ for Cloud customers can perform cost and capacity analysis of their VMware Integrated OpenStack cloud and compare those costs to operating infrastructure in the public cloud. Using VMware Integrated OpenStack, customers have deployed production OpenStack clouds in mere weeks, and rely on VMware vSphere Clustering, High Availability and vMotion® to protect workloads and maintain zero downtime in production. As an active partner in the OpenStack community, VMware packages, tests and supports all components of the distribution, including the full open source OpenStack code.

Announced yesterday, VMware Cloud Foundation™ will also support VMware Integrated OpenStack enabling customers to quickly deploy and operate their OpenStack clouds on VMware's virtual infrastructure on-premises or in the public cloud.
