Mansfield Oil Turns to VMware to Virtualize Its Data Centers and Increase Visibility Into Utilization of IT Assets Across the Organization

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - March 08, 2016) - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) today announced that Mansfield Oil, a national leader in the dynamic energy supply, logistics and services enterprise, relies on VMware vSphere® with Operations Management™ to virtualize its assets and help it continue to supply energy across the United States and Canada.

"Our goal from a technology perspective is to remain asset light to mirror our business, so we've focused heavily on virtualization," said Hercu Rabsatt, director, Infrastructure & Service Management, Mansfield Oil. "The flexibility and scalability we have gained from virtualization enables us to be a true partner to the business and support the organization's overall objectives. From an IT perspective, we wanted to build a core foundation that the business could stand upon, and VMware is that essential foundation."

Visibility into System Utilizations Aligns IT with the Business

Based in Gainesville, Ga., Mansfield Oil provides fuel and energy to more than 3,700 commercial customers, 440 school districts, 770 counties, 590 cities, and 800 state and province locations across the United States and Canada. The company supports every level of the energy supply and management process -- from purchasing and operations, to finance and equipment maintenance, designing a customized program to support organization's energy needs, every step of the way.

Mansfield Oil adopted virtualization more than five years ago and has virtualized 98 percent of its environment, according to its IT staff. Prior to VMware vSphere with Operations Management, Mansfield Oil did not have full visibility into system capacity and utilization. Since implementing VMware vSphere with Operations Management, Mansfield Oil has seen dramatic improvements in its environment by gaining insight into utilization rates, identifying underutilized resources and reclaiming them as needed, and achieving clear visibility into capacity along with the ability to forecast the need for additional IT resources over time. Currently, their virtualized environment supports business-critical applications including their ERP system, databases, web servers and more.

"We have a business to support, and supporting the business requires us to maximize IT investments as well as understand the status of those investments and resources," Rabsatt added. "We have to be able to predict what our capacity is going to month over month, year over year. Capacity planning drove our adoption of VMware vSphere with Operations Management. We now know where we stand in terms of IT capacity and utilization and where we are headed."

Since upgrading to VMware vSphere with Operations Management, Mansfield Oil IT reports that it has achieved the following additional benefits:

  • It identified idle and overprovisioned virtual machines in its data center and reclaimed 393 vCPUs, 816 GB of disk, and 3.3 TB of memory.
  • The ability to easily view and report on performance metrics.
  • The ability to readily pinpoint, diagnose, and resolve issues. The single unified management view provided by VMware vSphere with Operations Management enables faster problem resolution resulting in a reduction in IT downtime for Mansfield Oil.

Moving forward, the IT staff is planning to upgrade to VMware vSphere with Operations Management 6 in 2016. Additionally, the IT staff is piloting VMware Horizon® to deliver virtual or hosted desktops and applications across the organization. Mansfield Oil is exploring additional VMware solutions that will prepare the company to take advantage of a hybrid cloud architecture.
